Small Thatched Cottage
Small Thatched Cottage is believed to have been built around 1600 and is one of Eynsham’s oldest buildings. The date 1735, carved into the main beam near the inglenook fireplace, is thought to have been added rather later and is, therefore, misleading. The cottage was built next to the site of Eynsham Abbey which dominated the town from 1005 until its dissolution in 1538. At its height, Eynsham rivalled Oxford in importance both locally and nationally. Although very little remains of the Abbey today, some of the last surviving fragments of its pillars can be seen embedded in the garden walls of Small Thatched Cottage. Amenities
Small Thatched Cottage is located just off the Market Square in the very centre of Eynsham. For those travelling some distance, there are plenty of amenities within a few yards of the cottage including the Red Lion pub and bistro (https://theredlioneynsham.com/), the Bay Leaf Restaurant (http://bayleafeynsham.co.uk/) and the Lyall and Co. Café. On neighbouring Mill Street, you can also find Snax and the Cherry Tree Café serving light lunches.
Access
Although Small Thatched Cottage is brimming with character and charm, we regret that it was not built with access in mind and as a Grade II listed building, cannot be altered to accommodate people with disabilities. We therefore offer a home visitation service for those with access requirements living within an 8 mile radius of Eynsham.
The period features of the building include some low beams and doorways as well as uneven floors in places. Consequently, clients are advised that care should be taken at all times. Use of the building is, therefore, entirely at clients’ own risk and we regret that Nuance Counselling cannot accept responsibility in the highly unlikely event that injury should occur.
